"Flourishing After Trauma: More Than Just Surviving"

Too often, motivational speakers talk about how they overcame adversity to become successful, meaning how they got to be rich and/or famous.  The majority of us need to understand that if we have survived adversity we are successful.  Without sentimentality, Hunter speaks about how she moved beyond her history of childhood abuse, clinical depression, a near-death accident, and her daughter's ongoing battle with schizophrenia.  She offers methods that have been successful for her and can be utilized by others for healing their own wounded souls.

Advocate for Social Equity

Deborah Hunter advocates for social change.  She presents information from a human perspective.  Statistics are useful tools, but people are not dots on a number line.  Changes occur when we are moved to make them.  We are moved by the plight of the individual, by stories of actual life experiences.  Whether she is in her role as an artist in residence working with children and women at risk in multicultural environments, or an advocate for the homeless or individuals with mental illnesses, Hunter speaks from the viewpoint of those marginalized by society.

Workshops

"Building Self Esteem Through Self Expression"
A way to use writing as a tool to develop critical life management skills.

Self awareness is a spiritual awakening where the journey, not the destination, is the purpose.  Writing provides the key to unlock the doors of the past, reveals optional paths, alternate destinies.  Knowing that we are not trapped in our present existence is the first step toward healthy self esteem.

Hunter has introduced healing writing techniques to women who are in grief recovery, homeless, incarcerated and recovering from domestic violence; to teenage girls in state custody convicted of felony crimes, those in group homes and other programs.  These women of all ages have been able to express in their writing what they've not been able to speak out loud.

"In the Palm of Your Hand, Wrapped Around Your Finger or Just In Their Faces: How to Reach Your Audience"
Effective instruction on writing and delivering poetry as spoken word.

Spoken word is a living art form.  Because of spoken word, people are listening to, reading and writing poetry in ever growing numbers. Deborah Hunter has been performing as a spoken word artist since 1993.

Deborah J. Hunter’s acclaimed work in dramatic poetic monologues is performed in the voices and characterizations of a detached narrator and five women living with the effects of mental illness, homelessness, addiction and abuse.

Also available for performance is the audience favorite, “Bayou Stories”, in which she portrays an elderly woman telling stories about life on the Louisiana bayou before integration.
